Q & A with Jill Brashear
Can you tell me a bit about yourself and how became an author?
As a kid, I loved reading. My mom used to force me to go outside and play because I would much rather be in my bedroom with my nose in a book.
I knew I wanted to be a writer from an early age. I was fascinated with storytelling and was always in trouble for telling white lies.
What is your writing process like?
I’m the kind of writer who discovers as I go. I don’t outline or plot out in detail. I write scenes out of order. I get obsessed with my characters, and I’ve been known to stay up until midnight, get a few hours rest and go right back to writing at 4am.
What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I do yoga every day. It keeps me sane. I am very social. I never turn down a party invitation. I have a bunch of old-ladyish hobbies too. I enjoy knitting and puzzles are my favorite!!
How do you celebrate when you are finished writing a book?
Champagne and an evening out with my husband.
How do you celebrate when one of your books is released?
In the past, I’ve had book release parties. I would love to get that going again.
What is the most challenging part of writing?
The first draft. It takes me forever to get to know my characters in a way that the words start flowing.
What part of writing is the most fun for you?
Editing! I love adding scenes and cutting them..
What Authors or other books have inspired you to write?
Nora Roberts, Sierra Simone, Kristin Ashley
What is your favorite passage from one of your books?
In my first book, Try Easy, when Keoni teaches Lou how to surf. It was so heartfelt because he hates giving surf lessons to tourists, but he overcame that because he wanted Lou to feel the joy of surfing.
If you could meet any of your characters, who would it be and what would you say to them?
I would love to meet Eddie Alvarez and apologize for killing him off!
